The Problem

The same power and flexibility that has made the Internet an integral and indispensible part of modern life are the same that has allowed a plague of malicious software to infect our machines.  Not a day goes by without yet another story in the news or from a friend about a nasty Trojan, Worm, Adware, or Spyware infection.

How do you know when you’ve been stricken?  The infection can cause obvious symptoms like slowing the computer down or crashing it or having the browser display popup ads nonstop, or it can give no clue while leaking your sensitive private information like bank account and credit card numbers.  Surveys suggest that 80% or more of the computers on the internet have been infected at least once.  Infections happen simply by clicking a disguised link, installing a program, or reading your email.

Our Experience

Our independent testing overwhelmingly supports the survey statistics.  The only computers not infected were those never connected to the internet.  All others were infected, some by multiple malware, despite the careful habits and the use of major firewall and antivirus software.  They are squeaky clean now!

The Solution

Use a good program from the list below.  If your computer has Spyware, Adware or other kind of Malware, these programs will detect and remove them.  If they don’t, these programs will immunize and protect the computer against future threats.  We give XoftSpy highest marks for comprehensive coverage and NoAdware high marks for easy of use.

XoftSpy Scan - #1 Pick
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 08 July 2006

When we received the email touting XoftSpy Scan, we thought it was yet another slickly marketed product with empty promises.  Then we put Scan to the test, and found ourselves pleasantly surprised with the results.  Most impressive was the rich feature set.  XoftSpy completely scans the PC, including running processes, registry entries, files and folders, and detects and removes the whole gamut of Malware, including Adware, Spyware, Pop-Up Generators, Keyloggers, Trojans, and Hijackers.  It's obvious when you have a Pop-Up Generator or Hijacker because your PC will stop being usable, but how do you know when a Keylogger or Spyware is sending your credit card information to scamsters over the internet?  Unless you examine the data packets being sent out, you have no clue, until you see strange purchases or new accounts being opened in your name.

As the security analysts learn to defend against existing spyware, new ones get written to get around the defenses.  We like the completeness of XoftSpy's definition database and the automatic regular updates.  You can be totally protected against known malware but be vulnerable if your security program doesn't have the new culprit in its database.

Their try before you buy policy is commendable.  If you have an infection right now, you can download a free scanner immediately.  Pay only if you want to keep it after the trial.

NoAdware is one of our longstanding favorites for ease of use. One of the features that distinguishes it from the others is PC immunization.  This feature proactively protects your PC against new threats by securing a check list of items on your computer.
